“The world we have created is a product of our thinking; it cannot be changed without changing our thinking. “ -Albert Einstein

All of what we become in life is a result of our thoughts. Some spend much time and effort to train their thoughts for maximal impact in their lives. Others “go with the flow” and get so entrained in a routine that it becomes hard to break from it.

If you want a change in any aspect of your life it must begin with a change in your thoughts. Just like changing your body takes physical exercise…Getting your mind “in shape” takes focused mental exercise.

The first step to changing your thoughts is to do some spring cleaning. We clean the mind be forgiving the things that cause us angst. Get rid of any negative thinking or dwelling on things that are in the past and therefore out of your control.

The next step is to replace the old “stinking thinking” with a real plan for change. Positive mental exercises include reading good books, articles, and the like. It also includes taking time for meditation each day, and creating positive thought patterns that replace old reactions that might have been negative in the past.

This takes will power far beyond what it takes to condition the body. The patterns of the mind are far more engrained in your being than cravings of the body. That is why the last step is the most important.

You must be able to observe the changes in your thought patterns. This is very difficult because you can’t just look in the mirror and see changes like you do with the physical body…or can you?

The best tool for observation of changes in your mind is to keep a daily journal. This does not have to be elaborate…it should be limited to 5 minutes per day. But looking back on how your have changed is the best way to steer your thoughts in the direction you would like. Think of it as your mental “look in the mirror” each day. Remember…change your thoughts and you will change your life!
