"Your real influence is measured by your treatment of yourself." -A. Bronson Alcott

Many people spend a lot of time helping others in need, and that is a very good thing. To lend a hand, or an ear can be a lifesaver. The question I want to ask of you today is, how well do you really treat yourself?

Pressing matters in our lives with family, friends, and work can make it hard to carve out time for ourselves on a regular basis. I talk to many patients about spending a few minutes a day to stretch, meditate, and exercise. Often I get the response, "I would if I could find a few minutes."

The problem is that if you don't take some "you time" on a regular basis, your physical and mental health will suffer. You then become a less effective parent, friend, or employee.

Like anything else in life, it won't happen if you do not plan for that time in your day. I often tell patients to go to bed 15 minutes early and wake up 15 minutes early so they will have time to stretch, relax, and plan their day. Ones who follow that advice report better rest, less stress, and less stiffness in their bodies.

Remember, if you don't sharpen your ax it will not be of use before long, and your ability to influence others in a positive manner will decline. What have you done for you lately?
